Cosatu Logo

In 1985, Louise Almon designed the current logo for Cosatu. On the morning of the second day of the first congress of Congress of Trade Unions South Africa (Cosatu) Jay Naidoo asked her to make a proposal for the logo. Using her empty teacup, she traced a circle on a piece of paper and sketched a wheel with 3 workers. After discussing the different proposals, Almon’s design was selected. Naidoo and other members only requested that she change one worker into a woman, forming the configuration familiar to us now. She thought that she would have time to finish, or at least clean up, the design, at a later stage, but it went into print almost immediately. The drawing produced in 2011, at my request, was an opportunity for Almon to try and finish the logo, something she could longer do.
